Public Works is dedicated to increasing Americans’ understanding of and support for the systems and structures that make up our local, state and federal governments. Our work’s primary purpose is to create a confident and competent constituency for the role of government in our country. We do this by working with state and local leaders, public officials, advocates, and policy groups—often in coalition with one another—to help them identify and articulate a shared narrative about public services and government roles. These efforts, in turn, make it possible for a broader audience to understand and support the ways in which the public sector can create and maintain a good quality of life for the entire community. We have commissioned and continued to refine extensive research into how Americans think about government, taxes and government’s role in the economy. This research, combined with our partners’ ongoing field testing and our team’s dedication to integrating best practices from around the country, we have trained 1000s of individuals and organizations in 35 states. The successes of our partners across the U.S. show that we can both achieve short-term gains on critical policy questions and government reforms, while also furthering the goal of a long-term shift in public understanding and support of government at all levels.
