Addressing “runaway spending” in Minnesota

MinnesotaWe appreciated the impassioned defense of the role of government in this letter to the editor published in the Northfield News in Minnesota. Here’s our favorite excerpt:

If government spending is “runaway” now that our roads are in tatters, our schools threatened with future cuts, and the quality of our water and other natural resource management are undercut by insufficient funding, then what does it mean to give the taxpayer refunds? Does it not signal that we, as citizens and our political class, have given up on the mission of good governance? I hold that Americans are not quitters. We must rise to the multiple challenges and must do it together as a community in Northfield and as a nation throughout. We must sacrifice for the greater good or go down the path of individualism, rising inequality, and collective mediocrity.
