Americans’ Conflicting Views

wegweiserWe appreciated this short piece from Chris Cillizza with the Washington Post that looks at a recent NBC-Wall Street Journal poll highlighting Americans’ divided views about government. The poll’s respondents were asked to choose which of two statements best reflects their views. Forty-eight percent of respondents chose the statement “government should do more to solve problems and help meet the needs of people.” And the same share, 48%, chose the statement “government is doing too many things better left to business and individuals.” Cillizza argues, understandably, that lawmakers operating in this environment have little incentive to break with their ideological brethren and that it’s this divide that makes getting things done on issues like immigration reform so difficult. But, at Public Works, we know there is a better way, and our partners prove it all the time. It is possible to get past the “he said, she said” conversation about government by helping Americans connect the dots between their own goals for themselves, their families and their communities and the role government plays in realizing those goals.
