In May 2011, The Pew Economic Mobility Project released a poll titled the Economic Mobility and the American Dream. While pessimism about their own economic circumstances has increased, Americans remain optimistic about the future. They see a role for government to help lower-income and middle-class Americans succeed, but a majority believes the government currently does more to harm than to help economic mobility. Americans want the government to play a role in promoting economic mobility. However, Americans believe the government is currently doing an ineffective job.
