At Public Works we get frustrated with the constant assumption that somehow the private and public sectors are competing entities and when you take from one you give an equal amount to the other. Nothing could be further from the truth. The two systems co-exist and interact constantly in dynamic ways. This interaction was aptly explained in this recent Bloomberg article, “Capitalism and Government are Friends After All”:
If you like markets, if you applaud individual success and private business, you like government. One is not possible without the other. The relationship of government to the private marketplace and capitalism as a whole is one of parent and child.
