Self-Fulfilling Prophecy of Broken Government

360 frecciaThere is no shortage of articles these days about the impacts of the budget cuts resulting from the sequestration process. This short article from the Washington Post caught our eye because it points out one critical element that is often overlooked – when agencies don’t have the resources to accomplish their objectives, their failure fuels public cynicism about the ability of government agencies and workers to do their jobs, which can lead to further budget cuts. The article includes this quote from a Coalition for Effective Change report:

“Continued negative talk about needing to fix a broken government further eroded public confidence in federal institutions. Therefore cuts to budget and personnel that make it hard for agencies to serve the American people or meet their missions become a self-fulfilling prophecy of broken government.”
